Title: Witch Doctor
Prompt: Connie Britton - fairytale medical drama - like Grey's, but with fairytale characters
Type: Half-hour cable drama (à la Showtime).
Setting: Chicago, IL
Opening Credits Song: Terrible Things - April Smith and the Great Picture Show

Synopsis: Karen Marquez doesn't believe in anything--not God, not happily ever after, and especially not in herself.   Her therapy practice is struggling to attract patients and her lovelife has flatlined to boot. After an accident late one night, Karen wakes up and discovers that life is somehow, well, different.  Luckily for a certified therapist, though, there's no shortage of crazy people.

Karen Marquez - Marcia Gay Harden

Twice divorced, and on the verge of bankruptcy, Karen doesn't know which mess to deal with first.  Her patients have either killed themselves or skipped town without paying, and the less said about her family and friends, the better.  After her accident some new, decidedly strange, patients start showing up and she finds herself treating them almost in spite of herself.

Patient 'R' - Connie Britton - the agoraphobic

We learn the patients full names over the course of the series, but to Karen, at first, they're simply identified by an initial and a symptom or diagnosis.  'R' shows up supported by two other eventual patients, and after her initial consult refuses to leave the clinic.  After a lot of arguing, Karen relents and opens up some of the residential space, but not before making 'R' commit to overcoming her agoraphobic and other social anxiety issues.

Patient 'P'
- Gaius Charles - pre-surgical therapy

'P' requires therapy before being allowed the surgery he so desperately craves for a facial reconstruction.  Deformed since birth, he's desperate to be a 'regular boy', but other issues complicate his eligibility--not least his status as a pathological liar.  Charming to a fault, he's a serious challenge to some of Karen's rustier skills.

Patient 'M' - Mamie Gummer (hey! Streep Jr!) - debilitating stammering

'M' can't speak.  Well, she can, but she generally refuses to.  Her stammering has reached a point where the effort far exceeds the reward, and so she's mostly mute.  Although she helps 'R' come to seek treatment, she shies away from any help offered to her.  Eventually Karen breaks through to her, although in a less than conventional way, and 'M' reluctantly agrees to try some therapy for her speech issues.
What she can't express in words, she can express in music though, but is too shy to play for an audience.

Patient 'S' - Rose Byrne - chronic insomnia

Sleep issues?  Well, that's putting it mildly. 'S' wants nothing more than to be put into a medically-induced sleep, but when Karen takes her on she insists on addressing the underlying issues.  Inteligent and strong-willed, 'S' may turn out to be Karen's greatest challenge.

Patient 'B' - John Benjamin Hickey - trichotillomania

Impulse control disorders can be tricky for any therapist to deal with, but 'B' doesn't seem to want to be treated.  Especially when he develops a crush on Karen, who has no idea how to handle it.  His goal is to convert the residential space at the clinic into a working ward for the inpatients, despite Karen's resistance.

Patient 'A'
- Mary-Louise Parker - kleptomania

If it isn't nailed down, you can bet that 'A' will try to steal it.  From keychains to food, not to mention cash and shiny trinkets, she's got pick-pocketing skills that would put Oliver Twist to shame.  Unfortunately, she's also desperately unhappy and is risking serious prison time due to racking up a bunch of petty theft charges.  (She isn't concerned though, apparently back 'home' she has to worry about men with swords cutting off her hands.)  Karen isn't inclined to work with 'A', but the other patients convince her eventually.

Patient 'W' - Sonja Sohn - delusional disorder

'W' seems perfectly sane and rational, especially compared to some of the other more colorful patients, but it turns out that she's seeing a few things that she shouldn't be.  Especially a big white rabbit with a penchant for punctuality.  As a mother figure within the group, she frequently puts her own issues aside to help the others, which Karen has to deal with before she can even attempt to deal with anything else.
