Title: Manifest Destiny
Prompt: Archie Panjabi - space western
Type: 1 hour network drama
Setting:  This galaxy, somewhere. Year: 2352
Opening Credits Song:  The Charging Sky - Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins
Synopsis: With the advent of private space travel, everyone and their dog is exploring the galaxy to find a new home as Earth struggles to sustain itself after centuries of overpopulation.

Aasha 'Ash' Mistri (Archie Panjabi)

Graduated from the last class of space cadets before NASA was disbanded. Since then she's worked in the private sector - piloting crafts to all corners of the galaxy. Following tragedy in her personal life, she signs up for the new InterGlobal Police Force - helping to launch a fledgling law enforcement division for the rapidly spreading population that once lived on earth. It's the Old West spread out across the heavens, and somebody has to be Sheriff to all these goddamned cowboys.

She puts the 'hell, no' in no-nonsense, and while she makes friends easily, she has trust issues that will take at least six seasons to explore. A born overachiever, she has little patience for slackers and idiots. So working for a new and sprawling bureaucracy will have its own set of challenges.

AJ Spencer (Jesse Williams)

Although his heart is set on being an artist, family traditions and responsibilities drove him to government work. Although he can be both tough and occasionally brilliant, he'd really rather not be. With a quick temper and a talent for keeping secrets (particularly about his own romantic life), he's a reluctant asset as Ash's Deputy.  He says he's stuck with the Force for the long haul, but will he stand up and be counted when the government backing isn't reliable enough?

Uneasy around weapons, he'd rather restrain a suspect than try to take them out.  Politically liberal, he's surprised to find so many clashes of opinion with his co-workers, but persists in trying to be some kind of moral compass.

Vanessa 'Ness' Ramos (Naya Rivera)

Apparently sweet and homely, Ness is an expert in at least two martial arts (that she wants you to know about) and has an obsession with weaponry that leaves her very conflicted when charged with seizing stolen arsenals). She's the second Deputy, junior to AJ, but that won't stop her plotting to jump ahead of him in line.

Her religious beliefs would suggest that she's sworn to celibacy - how long will that last when she's free of her home and its traditions?

Zeke Lipmann (Richard Schiff)

Head Engineer and general receptacle for really all of the knowledge. Another former NASA employee, but not one that Ash met in her brief tenure there. A hard drinker and even harder when it comes to swearing, he doesn't like to be bothered by anyone else on the ship. If anyone is stupid enough to disturb his time alone with his books, it rarely ends well for them, because even in advancing years Zeke is still handy with his fists.

To his supreme disgust, the Force can only afford an apprentice as his second in command. Being forced to share the engine room with anyone is bad enough, but someone barely out of diapers? Yeah, Zeke likes to complain about that.

With rumors of his conflicting loyalties, and a story about his family that he has no intention of sharing, Zeke does not intend to make an easy shipmate.

Dr. Ellie Hanson (Elizabeth Mitchell)

Freshly divorced, Ellie is still bitter over losing custody of her son to her ex-husband.  She also considers this job a demotion, but the hospital she worked for in Houston has gone out of business since NASA wound down operations.  A friend of Ash's, she's reluctant to get overly involved with the rest of the crew--confiding in Ash that if she can find a new home out there she'll settle and then send for her son.

As a Dean at a teaching hospital until recently, she's embarrassed to be a little out of practice on the primary healthcare front, but the new job doesn't give her much chance to ease in.  As a recovering Valium addict she has her own demons still to address, but she's determined to do that alone.

Gabe Goodman (Gabriel Basso)

Fresh out of school and something of a tech prodigy, he's the apprentice that Zeke doesn't want to teach.  Apparently more interested in girls than working, when forced to knuckle down he has the ability to outstrip anyone else on the ship in terms of abilities.  He also has a freakish ability for languages, which the others call on when the computers let them down.  Quick to develop a crush, he's still the baby of the ship and everyone tries to have his back.  Except Zeke, mostly, who can't stand more than the minimum required time in his company.

Trouble-maker and bad boy wannabe, Gabe has a lot to learn. He just needs to learn it without endangering everyone else.

Esme Tattersall (Emma Thompson) Special Guest Star

A frequent visitor to the ship when they find themselves in legal trouble.  She's their counsel, HR department and ostensibly the face of their employers as far as the crew are concerned.  She's also a renowned gambler and known for her usually frosty demeanor.  Does she have secrets about the InterGlobal Police Force that the others need to know?  Well, we'll have to just wait and see....
